Ironing Tips: Fabric Facts

Every fabric is different and should be treated accordingly. The Use & Care manual that’s included with your iron will detail which temperature and/or setting should be used on individual fabrics. If you can’t locate yours, you can find it on the site here.

The label inside your clothing or linens should also recommend ironing treatments. If the fabric is a blend, use a lower temperature setting. If you don’t know what the content is, use the lowest temperature first and test on an inside seam. Here are some general guidelines:

Acetate: Dry iron without steam on the wrong side of the fabric with a cool iron.

Acrylic: Dry iron without steam on the wrong side of the fabric with a cool iron; use spray if necessary.

Corduroy: Ironing not needed, but can be pressed gently while still damp with several layers of cloth between the corduroy and the iron.

Cotton (calico, chintz, denim, muslin): Iron while still damp, pre-moisten it with a spray bottle, or use the spray button on your iron to dampen the fabric. Use steam and spray if necessary.

Linen: Iron while still damp, pre-moisten it with a spray bottle, or use the spray button on your iron to dampen the fabric.

Nylon: Dry iron and use spray if necessary.

Polyester: Iron while still damp, pre-moisten it with a spray bottle, or use the spray button on your iron to dampen the fabric. Use low or medium heat.

Silk: Iron on the wrong side of the fabric with low heat.

Wool (cashmere, flannel): Use a pressing cloth and steam-iron on the wrong side of the fabric on medium heat.
